- Wait for your computer to boot up. You should see the manufacturer's logo on the screen followed by the operating system's loading screen.
- If you have a password, enter it to log in to your account.
- Once you are logged in, you can begin using your computer.
Note that these steps may vary barely depending on your computer's operating system and hardware. If you encounter any issues during the startup process, consult your computer's manual or contact the manufacturer for assistance.
Lock or Log off the Computer
If you're leaving your computer unattended and want to secure your data and prevent unauthorized access, you should either lock your computer or log off. Here's what each option entails:
- Lock the computer: This option keeps your current session running in the background and requires a password to resume activity. To lock your computer on Windows, you can press the "Windows key + L" on your keyboard. On a Mac, you can use the "Control + Command + Q" shortcut.
- Log off: This option will close all open programs and sign you out of your user account. When you log back in, you'll need to reopen all the programs and documents you were working on. To log off on Windows, you can click the "Start" menu, select your account icon, and choose "Sign out". On a Mac, you can click the "Apple" menu, select "Log Out [your username]", and confirm.
Both options will protect your computer from unauthorized access, but locking is a quicker and more convenient option if you plan to return to your computer soon. If you'll be away from your computer for an extended period or want to ensure your data is completely secure, logging off is the better option.
